School nursing is the specialized practice of nursing focused on supporting and advancing well-being in academic settings.

School nurses may find themselves particularly busy during the cold and flu season, but will also work throughout the year on school-wide health initiatives, monitor immunizations, provide regular vision, hearing and dental screenings, dispensing medication and teaching health and nutrition classes.

Education requirements for nurses vary state-to-state and school district-to-school district, however all states require school nurses to be registered nurses (RNs). Other requirements may include certification or degrees in public health, education or counseling, though that depends on the demands of the particular school nurse job.
